“360 Degrees of AfriSki – watch here”
Let’s get ‘high’ 🙂
You will have a few icy options to choose from:
Night time temperatures drop to below freezing and day time temperatures only reach about 5˚C in winter, make sure that you are prepared so you can fully enjoy the weekend!
What gear do you need?
We want to ensure that you are fully prepared for your snow weekend in order to get the most out of your experience, and remember; “If you feel good, you ski better”.
Gone Skiing a specialist ski store in Fourways, Gauteng, which focuses on bringing both snowboarding and skiing gear to hungry snow lovers in Southern Africa. They like to be a cut above the rest and bring you not only the best quality in both equipment and attire from most parts of Europe and New Zealand, but also friendly advice and help from their experienced and trained staff. They sell and rent out gear.
During the winter season they also have a second store at AfriSki resort but they have very limited stock there. So whether you’re a first timer or a regular on AfriSki’s slope, it’s always wise to go through what you already have at home and compare it to their specially configured ‘Essential Items’ list below.
Now, before anyone starts to vigorously empty their piggy banks and only eat baked beans and toast for the next few months as you want to spend money on the below mentioned clothing list … listen to this advice: Do NOT think you have to buy ALL the clothes and goodies mentioned. Look in your cupboard to see what you already have. If you really, really don’t have it, find out from friends who have done the “ski-thing” before if they want to lend you some items…..if you still need some goodies, buy them for cheap-cheap at Mr Price Sport. You can also buy some goodies from Gum Tree or likewise online sites.
Thermals – This is the first and most important layer worn when skiing or boarding and consists of a crew top and long johns. Your thermal underwear will ensure that your body temperature is kept controlled and that you’re skin is kept dry while on the slope. Although not always the most fashionable, your thermal underwear is never visible and can be reused as a great set of pyjamas for our South African winters.
Fleece – This layer is worn over your thermal underwear and will generally just be a snug fitted zip down hoodie or fleece. It’s important to ensure that you second layer is breathable in order to allow moisture to escape. The purpose of this layer is to ensure added comfort and warmth while on the slope and is for casual wear and general use on your holiday.
Jacket – Your Jacket must always be waterproof, wind resistant and breathable. You’ll also find that most jackets for skiing and snowboarding also come with snow skirts, lift pass pockets and fully taped seams on pockets in order to protect your valuables. The most recent jackets also come with connections for your iPod and cell phone to help stay connected while carving in the snow.
Pants – This is probably the most import piece of equipment you’ll need. Pants need to be waterproof and breathable and some types offer thermal insulation for the colder days. Some ski pants are available with braces, but the more recent pants have been tailored to fit like a glove ensuring maximum warmth and security knowing that your pants won’t come off in a tumble. If possible, buy or rent a pair of waterproof pants, this will keep you dry and warm and make your snow experience much more enjoyable!
Gloves – A MUST have item. Gloves need to be waterproof and have a thermal or a fleece-like lining for extra comfort. Different gloves are available for different activities, for example gloves with built in wrist guards are available for snowboarders while we have a shorter snug fitting glove for skiers. We keep a wide range of gloves in all colours and style for young and old and even have a pair for the Jamaican bob sled team.
Goggles/Sun glasses – There is no question that this is one of the most important items to have for ANY ski trip. Snow blindness is a serious ailment and can happen to anyone without the correct protection against the UV rays reflected off the snow. Ski goggles come with an anti-fog layer and also help to keep the upper part of the face warm. Sunglasses can be an alternative to goggles, but only if it’s not snowing as the lenses will immediately fog up if it is.
Shoes & Socks – Leather or treated-suede lined boots are suitable for snow and there is a wide range available from kids to adults. It’s very important that it has a rubber sole to ensure that you do not slip any icy stairs or pathways. Tekkies and sneakers are always a safe bet as well as hiking boots.Wear thermal tube socks without any ribs or seams to avoid irritations and blisters while skiing and always have a dry pair to make sure your feat stays warm while you enjoy the Ski. Gum boots (available at stores like PnP or your local hardware store) are very popular as it prevents any ice and water from your feet. This is very popular among the A2A’s 🙂
Anyone who’s Addicted2Adventure – age, race, gender, nationality, colour, fitness level etc. doesn’t matter at A2A!
